Stiaan Klue, Executive Dean and CEO
Stiaan is the founder of the South African Institute of Tax Professionals, and served as the Institute's Chief Executive from 2007 until December 2015.
As a disadvantaged student at Point High School in Mossel Bay, North-West University offered him a full bursary to study chartered accountancy. In 2003 Stiaan completed his studies and joined Deloitte in Johannesburg. He continued his studies during his training contract and in 2005 he completed his masters degree in taxation cum laude and top of his class.
Stiaan serves on numerous boards including as Chairperson of the Centre for Association Research and Intelligence and as the Vice president of the Southern African Institute for Business Accountants. Stiaan was instrumental in the establishment of the African Association of Tax Institutes where he served as Vice President. In 2011 Stiaan was elected President of the International Tax Directors' Forum - the global forum for tax professional bodies.
After his training contract with Deloitte, Stiaan was a full-time academic supervising post graduate masters students with specialisation in taxation. After his short stint in academia, he continued to lecture part-time, published articles in various peer reviewed journals and delivered papers at international conferences. Stiaan founded and is the managing author of Silke on Tax Administration with co-authors Professor Jackie Arendse (Rhodes) and Dr Bob Williams (UKZN).
Mrs Vanessa Fox, Chief Learning Officer
Vanessa is a chartered accountant with more than 10 years’ managerial experience. She recently completed her Masters Degree in Management.
She headed up the 'WOW Group', a learning and development company for a number of years and Prior to joining The Tax Faculty in November 2017, Vanessa was a director and leader of Learning and Development at SizweNtsalubaGobodo.
As a facilitator of learning, Vanessa has developed and delivered over 120 learning interventions ranging from financial skills to leadership, change management and strategy courses. Her vision is to enhance the potential in individuals and organisations through learning and development.
Professor Piet Nel, Head School of Applied Taxation
Piet is a chartered accountant with more than 25 years' experience. He formerly lectured taxation at UNISA and the University of Pretoria where he acted as study supervisor on post graduate level.
Prior to joining The Tax Faculty, Piet was the project director for tax at the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. Over a period of more than a decade, Piet presented numerous tax seminars and workshops to tax practitioners in South Africa. He is currently a visiting professor at Wits University.
Piet is also well known in the media, regularly appearing on radio and TV talk shows. He actively contributes to the tax thought in South Africa and regularly publishes articles in professional journals and magazines.
Lee-Ann Steenkamp, Senior Lecturer
Lee-Ann is a research fellow at the Stellenbosch University Business School. Prior to that, she lectured undergraduate and postgraduate taxation at the Universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch and the Western Cape.
She holds a M Com with specialisation in tax, and is a Master Tax Practitioner (SA) with the SA Institute of Tax Professionals.
Lee-Ann has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed law and accounting journals. She is currently reading towards a PhD at the University of Cape Town. Her thesis will deal with environmental and tax law instruments to promote the use of renewable energy in South Africa. She is also a contributing author to other publications.
Wessel Smit, Senior Lecturer
Wessel is a chartered accountant and specialises in tax law. He also holds both an M Com (Taxation) and H Dip (Taxation).
He is currently an independent tax consultant and director at Core Tax (Pty) Ltd. Previously he was a senior tax lecturer at the University of the Free State and during 2012 and 2013 lectured taxation to the CTA students at the University of Johannesburg.
Wessel has extensive experience in presenting taxation courses, advising on taxation issues and experience in the writing and reviewing of technical learning material.
Dr Carika Fritz, Senior Lecturer
Carika holds the degrees LLB (UP), LLM (UP) and LLD (UP). She was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 2010 and as a notary public in 2013.
Christo Theron (CA(SA) H Dip Tax (Wits) M Com Tax (UP)
Christo is a recognized specialist in the field of indirect taxes. As a technical expert Christo is responsible for the quality of all VAT and Customs and Excise opinions issued by TradeTaxPlus.
Christo is a Chartered Accountant and holds a Master’s Degree in Taxation at the University of Pretoria.
Christo is the chairperson of the SAICA VAT Committee. He also presents most of the SAICA VAT seminars. Previously be presented all the LexisNexis VAT seminars.
Christo has been involved in the Unisa Advanced Course in VAT for many years and have assisted to build the program as a leading educational tool in South Africa. He still presents the course.
